Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling account for over 80% of the region’s production. Nelson also has a reputation for fine examples of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and distinctive Sauvignon Blanc.

The mountains to the west of the region provide a rain shadow effect while coastline helps to moderate temperature extremes.

The stony alluvial soils of the Waimea Plains, high sunshine hours and moderating maritime influence contribute to the production of vibrant aromatic white wines with overt fruit flavours supported by a flinty backbone. Chardonnay from the plains is rich and expressive with a fine acid structure; the Pinot Noir is perfumed with cherry and plum flavours supported by supple tannins on the palate.

The Moutere Hills are formed from the gravels of an old river system, which contribute to the production of wines with richness and texture. The Pinot Noir has concentrated flavours with fine tannins and elegance; Chardonnay is complex, with excellent structure.
