Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is an international brand in its own right, having reached super star status with international wine commentators and consumers alike.
Marlborough wineries offer a huge range of varieties, from red-fruited, mid-weight Pinot Noir to well-structured Chardonnay, to white aromatics of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer which reflect the region’s purity and vivacity.
These vineyards are mainly planted on sites with moderately low fertility and stony, sandy loam top soil overlying deep layers of free-draining shingle.
The diverse soils and mesoclimates of plenty of sunshine, moderate temperatures and long hot days followed by cool nights, with a long growing season are the keys to Marlborough’s fruit intensity, strong varietal expression, and acid retention over long ripening periods.
The eastern coastal aspect provides cooling sea breezes, and protective mountains give relief from extreme rain and wind. Long Indian summers occasionally dice with drought but more often allow a wide range of styles to flourish with the expressive fruit flavours that Marlborough is famous for.
