Wairarapa and Martinborough

Wairarapa is New Zealand’s sixth largest wine producing district including the subregions of Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton.

Pinot Noir accounts for the largest percentage of area under vine followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris.

The Martinborough subregion makes a large contribution to the country’s quality winemaking reputation as a very dynamic and quality-focused region, and has earned a reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir.

Soils include free draining silty loams, shallow clays and gravel river terraces. The climate is very similar to that in Marlborough with cool nights and warm sunny days, preserving the fresh vibrant characters in whites.

The range of soil types and mesoclimates provide an exciting choice for winemakers who can make single vineyard wines or blend from several vineyards.
